THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who ages in reverse: He is born seventy years old and becomes younger as the years progress. This faithful graphic-novel adaptation chronicles Benjamin Button’s many adventures: He falls in love with a woman who ages normally (this causes complications), starts a family, and establishes a successful business. In his later years, he attends Harvard and plays on their football team. By the time he is an old man, Benjamin Button resembles a baby. "And then he remembered nothing. Through the noons and nights he breathed and over him there were soft mumblings and murmurings that he scarcely heard, and faintly differentiated smells, and light and darkness."
The film adaptation of the story—starring Brad Pitt (as Benjamin Button) and directed by David Fincher (who also directed Pitt in Fight Club and Seven) opens in December 2008. This adaptation will allow fans of the film to experience the original source material in a fresh and fun graphic-novel format.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is the author of The Great Gatsby, Tender Is the Night, and other Great American Novels. Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir have written for a variety of comic books, including Wonder Woman, New X-Men, and Adventures of Superman. Kevin Cornell is an illustrator and designer in Philadelphia.

Reviews:
"The impending release of a movie version starring Brad Pitt has made this humorous tale, formerly among the least known of Fitzgerald's short stories, a hot property. DeFillippis and Weir's adaptation preserves the original's straight-faced tone describing the career of a man who begins life in his 70s and grows progressively younger…there's much to enjoy in this handsome little hardbound book. Cornell's sepia watercolor panels are especially clever at showing physical and emotional changes as Benjamin moves backward through life while America rolls forward for 70 years. A useful, gracefully written afterword by Donald G. Sheehy, professor of English, completes the volume nicely." - Publishers Weekly
"an elegant sepia rendering of the fable" - St. Petersburg Times
"this meticulous volume...is a strikingly literal adaptation, re-creating dialogue, narration, and even chapter breaks with an assured and deliberate hand. While Fitzgerald's light tone is well preserved, it is the artwork that is the most striking...highly evocative, with an excellent use of facial expression to moving and comic effect...a work of quality" - School Library Journal
"a great looking volume...it has only whetted my appetite" - Steve Duin, The Oregonian
"a delightful companion...Cornell's sepia-toned illustrations capture Fitzgerald's wry humor and make manifest the story's absurdity. The book even taps the pathos and poetry of the story's ending" - Tom Beers, Newsday.com
"Brad Pitt’s latest blockbuster is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novella The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, about a man who’s born old and ages back to infancy. The movie comes out this Christmas. But this graphic novel is no less inventive than the film. the graphic novel retains the original time frame — as well as the story’s ties to Fitzgerald’s own, favorite era — and its carefully compressed text and beautifully detailed illustrations evoke that era perfectly. Needless to say, no adaptation can match the experience of reading the novella itself, but this one comes remarkably close." - VeryShortList.com
